BPCL's CSR Vision
BPCL co created CSR Vision involving all stake holders revolves around Corporate vision of Energizing Lives through Sustainable Development. This co created vision has been created after discussion & involvement of the various stakeholders like partnering organisation, BPCL Employees, TOP management, project beneficiaries, etc. The vision is “Be a Model Corporate Entity with Social Responsibility Committed to Energizing Lives through Sustainable Development”. BPCL thrust areas for CSR are Education, Water Conservation, Skill Development, Health & Hygiene and Community Development. Through CSR initiatives BPCL has widespread impact over the country in and around its business locations as well as in rural / tribal communities. Every year brings new learning and using this learning BPCL has scaled up various projects, taken up new projects and exited from certain projects that have attained sustainability.
Quality Education is one of core thrust areas under CSR. It is an important medium to address the issue of inequality in the world. Education contributes to an individual’s well being as well as the overall development of the country. Hence the projects supported by BPCL under education are primarily focused on improving the learning levels of students, ensuring experiential learning (Fun & Learn), capacity building of teachers and creating facilities to minimize hurdles in the learning process. In its efforts to contribute to the above, BPCL has reached out to over 6.5 lac children since 2010.
BPCL water conservation & rain water harvesting projects are known as project BOOND. It now spans across India in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. In project is ensured that Village Water Committees are formed and that have taken over the governance and maintenance of the various water structures we have built. BOOND project also supports sustainable employment through new and improved agricultural practices like crop rotation, mulching, newer crops, innovative methods of irrigation and horticulture. Since 2010, BPCL has collectively impacted over 190 villages through BOOND increasing the availability and storage of surface water, as well as unseen benefits. These include recharge of ground water, drinking water for cattle, decrease in migration, improving the quality of life of the villagers and a positive effect on the environment in addition to flood moderation.
Skill Development is an important area to bridge the gap between demand & supply of skilled workforce. With an objective to empower underprivileged unemployed youth, women and persons with disabilities and also equip them with skills, BPCL has several partners in different parts of the country. Placement linked vocational training is provided through these projects. Most recently, focus is also being laid on skills which are rural specific mainly to enhance trainee income levels and check migration. In the case of PWDs the project also targets increasing the confidence level of the person in addition to imparting them with an employable skill. On earning, the person no longer feels like a burden to his family/society. A positive outcome of the training programs are trainees who become trainers thereby passing on the skill learned. Some beneficiaries are encouraged to start up their own small businesses in the comfort of their homes. Since 2010 BPCL has skilled more than 5000 individuals.
Health, which is the lifeline of a nation’s well- being. We have conducted various health camps and awareness programs for underprivileged communities. BPCL has reached to many tribal communities & rural population where hardly anyone has reached. BPCL has impacted more than 42000 families since 2010. In response to the call given by our Hon’ble Prime Minister to join the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, BPCL has become part and parcel of the mission with a moral commitment to our nation under CSR initiatives. Swachh Vidyalaya Mission was an integral part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and under this mission, BPCL constructed 1910 toilet blocks in schools spread across 7 states and 27 districts. We have even provided sustainable water supply system to every toilet block which has been constructed and has also taken responsibility of maintenance for minimum of 3 years.
In Community development, BPCL undertakes the project for overall village development. The projects are identified as per the need & problems of community. BPCL has impacted more than 100 villages in last 6 years.
BPCL has got many accolades for its impactful CSR projects such as rated in top 10 companies for CSR in India by Economic Times for 2nd year in succession (2014-15 & 2015-16), World Petroleum Council Excellence Award at Moscow for project “Boond” in 2014-15, “Company with Best CSR & Sustainability” – Award by Asian Center For Corporate Governance & Sustainability in 2014-15, ICAI’s Best CSR Award in Rural Development Category 2014-15, etc
